The redevelopment of Calton House formed an integral part of Network Housing Group's Older Persons Strategy. This strategy sought to create a new living environment where residents will be able to stay in their own home and have access to a level of care that supports their independence.

The scheme consists of 55 new apartments designed for assisted independent living, whilst also providing support and communal facilities for use by the residents, their families and support staff along with the local community.

The scheme has been subject to a number of public resident consultations, which have been key to ensuring that residents, families and neighbours are continually involved in the process and evolution of the design and brief.

Consultations with the residents, staff and neighbours led to a phased development so that around half the existing residents can remain on site during the first phase, moving into the new accommodation at the end of phase 1 to allow demolition of the rest of the buildings and construction of phase 2 flats.
