This scheme in Bragbury End, for Stevenage Borough Council, was part of a wider redevelopment to increase the council's housing portfolio.
The scheme achieved planning approval (October 2019) to construct 78no. new independent living apartments, 117no. private sale and social rent flats and 24no. houses together with associated communal facilities, green spaces and retail units to serve the wider community.
An important aspect of the design was to ensure that the Independent living scheme was at the very heart of the masterplan. The residents will have direct and accessible access to the public open spaces and retail areas whilst also having more secure private spaces at ground level and on the roof terrace.
The overall mass is designed to blend into the existing suburban grain. The houses are located to serve as transitionary buildings between the development and the existing houses and site boundaries. The apartment blocks serve as the central aspect and provide a large frontage onto the main entrance road. One of the 3nos main apartment blocks is designed to be a dedicated independent living building.
A selected palette of materials and architectural elements were used to create a contemporary series of high quality buildings, with recessed balconies and areas of large full height glazing.
The scheme includes larger zones of green spaces across the development. These vary in size and accessibility, with some intended for private use and other being used as formal open spaces.
