Competition winning design for an extra care facility for elderly people. The brief required an innovative approach to homes for life for elderly people. Kyle Smart Associates Limited designed the whole project based on "streets" to avoid institutional feel, creating rest points in the streets by introducing reminiscing rooms and Internet rooms, or merely views out over the park. Accommodation is in the form of flats which can be easily altered to provide a separate living in carer if required. Residents can choose the exact package of care required, ranging from none to total care, and the layouts allow for this. Residents do not need to move out of the flats because they are no longer suitable for their needs: the care package is simply altered along with the flat layout.

Parkside has been open since summer 2006.
